Akagidani Suigo: Flowing Somen and Ayu Fishing in Tanabe
Overview
Akagidani Suigo (read 'Akagidani Suigo') is a beloved nagashi-somen restaurant in the Ayukawa district of Tanabe, about 30 minutes inland from the Nanki-Shirahama hot springs. The open-sided hall seats roughly 100 diners around channels of flowing water; walls only waist-high let a cool breeze through, and a few tables look straight out onto a waterfall — a genuinely refreshing way to eat on a hot day.
The signature dish is nagashi-somen (600 yen), but the real fun is the ayu (sweetfish): you can borrow a rod and line for free and hook your own from the tank out front, then have it grilled with salt (670 yen) to eat in or take home raw. The menu also runs to mehari-zushi, tempura, unaju and more, and cashless payment has been accepted since 2023. Note the practicalities: the season runs roughly late April to late September, hours are 10:00–18:00 with no fixed closing day, and reservations are not taken, so weekends fill fast — arrive early. Free parking for about 20 cars.
